Datacom NZ Data Center (Site Lead of Operations)
I started at Datacom as a Site Lead of Operations in 2022.
My primary responsibility is to ensure the smooth operation of our
data center. This involves coordinating and managing my team’s
workload, which consists of a range of tasks related to maintaining and
upgrading our data center infrastructure.
Some of my key duties include:
Overseeing the installation, configuration, and maintenance of data center equipment, such as servers, storage devices, network switches, and routers.
Managing the data center’s power, cooling, and physical security systems, ensuring they run efficiently and effectively.
Implementing best practices for data center operations, including developing and enforcing policies, procedures, and standards.
Collaborating with other departments within Datacom, such as Sales, Marketing, and Customer Service,
to align our data center operations with the company’s overall strategy and goals.
To excel in my role, I rely heavily on my strong technical knowledge
and experience. In this role i have gained a deep understanding of
data center infrastructure, including security
systems, as well as proficiency in tools like DCIM software and other
data center management platforms. My ability to analyze complex data and
identify patterns helps me optimize our data center operations and
improve efficiency.
One of my biggest strengths is my ability to communicate effectively
with both technical and non-technical customers. Whether it’s
explaining complex technical concepts or collaborating with
cross-functional teams, I pride myself on being able to convey
information clearly and concisely. My interpersonal skills also
allow me to build good relationships with my team members, colleagues,
and external partners.
Some of the most rewarding aspects of my job involve resolving
complex technical issues and finding creative solutions to improve our
data center operations. For instance, I had the opportunity to lead a project to
upgrade our data center’s telecommunications cabling, which involved reorganizing
connections of more than 3 thousand points without outages, maintaining
zero downtime, and improving compliance and future.
It was a challenging project, but seeing the tangible results
of our hard work was incredibly fulfilling.
Of course, no day is complete without its share of challenges. One of
the biggest obstacles I face is balancing short-term needs with
long-term goals. Sometimes, we need to make quick fixes to address
immediate issues, but I always try to keep sight of our broader
objectives and ensure that our solutions align with the company’s
strategic vision.
Overall, I find my role as a Data Center Operations Team Lead both
exciting and rewarding. Every day presents new opportunities to learn,
grow, and contribute to the success of Datacom. I’m grateful for the
chance to work alongside such a talented and dedicated team, and I look
forward to continuing to drive innovation and excellence in the data center.
